Course objective
In this course, we will cover Chapter 6 – 9 and 11 of the textbook. We discuss three topics related to calculus: 1) advanced techniques and applications of integration, 2) infinite sequences and series, 3) vectors in 3 dimensional spaces.
Grading
I will grade on a curve. Final grades will be computed according to the following breakdown:
Participation | 5 % |
Homework | 15 % |
Quiz | 10 % |
Tests | 3 × 15 % = 45 % |
Final Exam | 25 % |
Calculator or computer
Use of calculators and/or computers is not allowed on quizzes, tests, and the final exam.
Homework
There is no way to learn calculus without solving lots of problems. Homework will be assigned weekly, using web-based WeBWorK system. The deadline is every Wednesday. I recommend you to work in groups and help each other. But do not copy some- one’s steps directly. You must understand how to solve the problems.
Additional materials
It is always advisable to work as many additional problems from the book as you have time for. In each week I will post on the course webpage a list of recommended problems and a worksheet. You don’t need to submit the worksheet, but studying it will be helpful to improve your mathematical writing skill. Also, I will post model solutions of quizzes, worksheets, and tests. Check the course webpage regularly.
Quiz
On every Thursday, there will be a quiz at the end of the class. Make up quizzes will not be given unless you have a documented reason.
Test
There will be three in-class midterm tests and a cumulative final exam. Dates for the midterm exams will be announced in class. The final exam is scheduled by the university; it is scheduled for May 1, 12:00 – 15:00. This could change. The final exam will be cumulative, but may slightly emphasize material covered between the third in-class exam and the last day of class. Make up exams will not be given unless you have a documented reason.
Attendance
Coming to every class during the official academic term is required. Attendance will be taken intermittently. This will be included in the “participation” portion of your grade.
Academic honesty
As a University of Georgia student, you have agreed to abide by the University’s academic honesty policy, “A Culture of Honesty” and the Student Honor Code. All academic work must meet the standards described in “A Culture of Honesty” found at: http://www.uga.edu/honesty. Lack of knowledge of the academic honesty policy is not a reasonable explanation for a violation. Questions related to course assignments and the academic honesty policy should be directed to the instructor.
Disclaimer
The course syllabus is a general plan for the course; deviations announced to the class by the instructor may be necessary.
